Investing in Our Planet: Partnering for Adaptation and Resilience to Climate Change

The latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) indicates that climate change’s impacts are worse than expected and warned that some of the impacts we are seeing today are irreversible. Currently, about 3.6 billion people live in countries highly vulnerable to climate impacts, creating an urgent need to immediately scale up adaptation. The IPCC states there is a large gap in adaptation efforts, with more than ninety percent of climate finance going to mitigation activities.

The U.S. Government and other donors implement climate solutions on the ground globally in countries facing the greatest threats from climate change. In addition to mitigation efforts, significant investment is needed to scale up adaptation and resilience—strengthening the capacity for communities, nations, and ecosystems to withstand the most severe impacts of climate change.

This panel will convene speakers from the government, private sector, and research sector to discuss what’s ahead for climate investment and how funding will be used to support adaptation and build the resilience of those most affected, and threatened, by climate change.

Technology: The Great Equalizer for DEIA?

Over the past few years, we have not only witnessed a seismic shift in how we communicate globally because of the pandemic, but we have also paid much more attention to who is speaking and what it means for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA). For many, technology has enabled organizations and individuals to get things done despite the pandemic. And in some ways, it has also shed light on racial and ethnic inequities that may have been previously ignored. Voices that may have not historically been heard from the Global South and underrepresented racial and ethnic development voices are now heard through a variety of online platforms.

But, the question remains, does technology inadvertently foster diversity and support inclusion and accessibility or does it do more harm than good? And what does the future development workforce of 2030 look like? Join us for a conversation exploring the role of technology in diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

Speakers will share their own experiences and describe whether technology has helped or hindered inclusion within their organizations and lives. They will explore the challenges faced when moving the needle on DEIA and shed light on what needs to happen to ensure equitable pay, recognition, and power for the global workforce.

Moderator:
  • Bobby Jefferson, Vice President, Global Head of Diversity, Equity, Engagement, and Inclusion, DAI and Chair, SID-Washington Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee, Moderator
